Rwanda President Paul Kagame has described Tanzania as a strategic gateway for regional trade and a vital partner in East Africa’s economic development.

Speaking during his one-day working visit to Dar es Salaam, President Kagame emphasized the importance of strengthening long-standing bilateral relations, noting that Tanzania plays a central role in supporting Rwanda’s access to regional and global markets.

He highlighted that Tanzania’s infrastructure, particularly its transport and logistics systems, remains essential for landlocked countries in the region, enabling smoother cross-border trade and economic integration.

The President also pointed to the Port of Dar es Salaam as a key shared economic asset that continues to facilitate trade flows, strengthen supply chains, and support broader integration within the East African Community.

TANZANIA AND CHINA LAUNCH HIGH-TECH CENTRE TO STRENGTHEN TRADE AND INVESTMENT TIES
Tanzania has officially launched the China High-Tech Fair at Ubungo in Dar es Salaam, marking a key milestone in economic and technological cooperation with China.

The event was attended by Ms. Angellah Kairuki and hosted by Mr. Chen Mingjian, alongside more than 1,000 participants including business leaders and government officials.

The fair is positioned as more than a trade exhibition, serving instead as a strategic platform to advance technology transfer, investment, and long-term economic collaboration between the two countries.

It also reinforces the role of the East Africa Commercial and Logistics Centre (EACLC) in Ubungo as a regional hub for trade, warehousing, digital commerce, and transport connectivity, further strengthening Dar es Salaam’s status as a major business center.

With over 2,000 business spaces and integrated digital infrastructure including fintech services and high-speed internet, the facility is expected to support modern commercial activity and enhance cross-border trade.

TANZANIA AND RWANDA SIGN DEAL TO STRENGTHEN TRADE AND REGIONAL INTEGRATION
Tanzania and Rwanda have reached a landmark agreement aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and removing trade and tax-related barriers that hinder the movement of goods between the two countries.

The agreement is designed to enhance the benefits of regional frameworks such as the East African Community Common Market Protocol and the African Continental Free Trade Area, with a focus on improving cross-border trade efficiency and investment flows.

The deal was reached during a high-level meeting between President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Paul Kagame at State House in Dar es Salaam during a one-day working visit.

Discussions focused on strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing regional stability, and expanding investment opportunities, particularly in infrastructure development and streamlined cross-border business processes.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of reviewing existing joint projects to eliminate barriers to commerce and foster stronger economic and people-to-people relations between the two nations.

TANZANIA AND KENYA MOVE TO REMOVE TRADE BARRIERS AND DEEPEN REGIONAL INTEGRATION
Tanzania and Kenya have agreed to eliminate all non-tariff barriers by the end of the month in a major step aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The two countries also agreed to establish a joint monitoring committee to track non-tariff barriers, address emerging challenges, and ensure smoother cross-border trade with fewer administrative obstacles.

The announcement followed closed-door talks between President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President William Ruto at State House in Dar es Salaam.

The leaders held wide-ranging discussions covering economic cooperation, security, and regional stability, including efforts to combat drug trafficking and maritime piracy in the region.

During the visit, eight bilateral agreements were signed covering sectors such as rail transport integration, agriculture, energy, and infrastructure development. Key projects include linking rail networks across Tanga, Taveta, Kilimanjaro, and expanding the standard gauge railway (SGR) connection toward Singida and Kenya.

The agreements are expected to reduce trade costs, improve connectivity, and further advance East African Community integration.

TANZANIA AND TÜRKİYE SIGN TAX AGREEMENT TO STRENGTHEN INVESTMENT TIES
Tanzania and Türkiye have signed a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) aimed at boosting trade, attracting investment, and improving cooperation in tax administration between the two countries.

The agreement includes measures to prevent tax evasion on income tax and ensures that the same income is not taxed in both jurisdictions, a step intended to improve transparency and enhance investor confidence.

The accord marks Türkiye as Tanzania’s 13th Double Taxation Agreement partner, forming part of broader efforts to create a more predictable and investor-friendly tax environment for cross-border business.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Hon. Khamis Mussa Omar said such agreements, when combined with Bilateral Investment Treaties, play a key role in promoting trade, investment flows, and overall economic growth.

He added that the agreement signals Tanzania’s continued openness to foreign investors and strengthens long-standing diplomatic and economic relations, which have deepened further following President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s state visit to Türkiye in April 2024.

GOVERNMENT REFINES PUBLIC INVESTMENT BILL AFTER STAKEHOLDER REVIEW
The government is in the final phase of revising the Public Investment Bill following a comprehensive assessment conducted after its initial tabling in Parliament in 2023. Once the review is completed, the Bill will be resubmitted for further parliamentary procedures leading to its enactment into law.

The process followed deliberations by the Parliament of Tanzania through the Public Investment Parliamentary Committee (PIC), which reviewed the draft legislation and collected input from various stakeholders.

Speaking on the progress, Dr. Pius Chaya (MP) said the government undertook a detailed evaluation of the public investment management framework to identify gaps and improve effectiveness.

He noted that stakeholder consultations played a key role in shaping the proposed amendments, ensuring that the revised Bill addresses identified weaknesses and strengthens coordination, oversight, and management of public investments.

The reforms are intended to improve efficiency in how public resources are invested and to align the framework more closely with national development priorities.

GGML EARNS RECOGNITION FOR SAFETY AND SUSTAINABLE MINING PRACTICES
Geita Gold Mining Limited continues to strengthen its reputation as a leader in occupational health, workplace safety, and sustainable mining after receiving major recognition at the Awards for Occupational Safety and Health (AOSH) held in Njombe on May 1.

The company emerged as the Overall Winner at the awards ceremony, securing 11 major awards and receiving additional recognition for its community outreach and workplace health and safety education initiatives.

The honours formed part of more than 20 awards presented to institutions across different sectors, highlighting GGML’s efforts to maintain a safe, healthy, and productive working environment.

At the 2025 OSHA Gala, GGML also won 11 awards, including top honours for leadership in occupational safety and health, a performance the company has sustained into 2026.

Speaking on the achievement, Mr. Simon Shayo attributed the success to strong leadership, continuous improvement, and sustained investment in workplace safety systems.

Mr. Shayo noted that the company’s safety framework aligns with AngloGold Ashanti’s 2030 aspiration of achieving a workplace free from injury and harm, while also supporting Sustainable Development Goal 3 on good health and wellbeing.

TISEZA, TIB PARTNERSHIP TARGETS FASTER INDUSTRIAL GROWTH
A new strategic partnership aimed at accelerating industrial investment and expanding Special Economic Zones (SEZs) has been launched through a landmark agreement between Tanzania Investment and Special Economic Zones Authority and TIB Development Bank.

The collaboration, formalised through a Strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), seeks to modernise Tanzania’s investment environment and support sustainable economic growth aligned with the country’s Vision 2050 objectives.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will establish a coordinated framework combining technical expertise and financial resources to simplify investment facilitation and improve the development of Special Economic Zones nationwide.

Officials stated that the initiative will support investors through streamlined administrative procedures, targeted technical assistance, and improved access to long-term financing, factors considered essential for attracting and retaining both domestic and foreign investment.

The partnership is also expected to improve project efficiency, reduce barriers to investment, and strengthen the competitiveness of Tanzania’s industrial and special economic zones.

A key focus of the programme is the empowerment of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly those operating within SEZs, by improving their integration into industrial value chains and expanding access to financing and technical support services.

MINING REVENUE PROJECTED TO EXCEED TZS 1.2 TRILLION TARGET
The Mining Commission has expressed confidence that revenue collection from the mining sector will surpass the government’s TZS 1.2 trillion target for the 2025/2026 financial year, following strong performance across the industry.

The update was presented during a full Commission meeting in Dodoma chaired by Dr. Janet Lekashingo, where members reviewed quarterly performance reports and discussed strategies to further strengthen the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

Dr. Lekashingo commended the Commission’s management and technical teams for progress made in improving revenue collection, strengthening oversight of mineral markets and buying centres, enhancing mine safety, and increasing Tanzanian participation throughout the mining value chain.

She noted that the improved performance reflects stronger compliance measures and more effective regulation within the sector, emphasizing that mining remains a key pillar of government revenue generation and economic growth.

The Commission also directed officials to intensify geological research, particularly on strategic and critical minerals, with the aim of unlocking new investment opportunities and promoting greater value addition within the industry.

BANKING SECTOR SHOWS STRONGER FUNDING AND CREDIT GROWTH
The country’s banking sector continues to record strong performance, supported by rising customer deposits, improved funding structures, and increased lending to productive sectors of the economy.

According to the Bank of Tanzania Financial Stability Report for December 2025, the banking subsector experienced a wider but more sustainable funding gap, reflecting stronger reliance on stable financing sources such as retained earnings and customer deposits.

The report shows that the funding gap increased to TZS 4.98 trillion in 2025 from TZS 3.08 trillion in 2024, while retained earnings rose to TZS 5.7 trillion, strengthening banks’ capital buffers and improving resilience against potential economic shocks.

Total lending, including loans, overdrafts, and advances, also expanded significantly to TZS 45.5 trillion, highlighting continued growth in credit issuance amid improving macroeconomic conditions.

At the same time, investments in government and private sector securities reached TZS 9.7 trillion, indicating that banks are maintaining a balanced asset strategy by combining lending activities with relatively lower-risk investment instruments.

TRA INTERCEPTS 28 TONNES OF SMUGGLED MACADAMIA NUTS AT TARAKEA BORDER
The Tanzania Revenue Authority in Kilimanjaro Region has seized 28.15 tonnes of macadamia nuts that were allegedly being smuggled into the country through illegal routes at the Tarakea border in Rombo District.

The interception forms part of ongoing efforts to combat cross-border smuggling, protect government revenue, and enforce agricultural trade regulations.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. James Jilala said the consignment was intercepted during a night operation conducted on April 29, 2026, through coordinated efforts between TRA patrol officers and the Regional Defence and Security Committee.

Mr. Jilala noted that the operation enabled authorities to secure both the trucks and the entire shipment before the goods could enter the market illegally.

The seized macadamia nuts, together with the vehicles involved, remain under the custody of the Customs Department at the Tarakea border post as investigations continue.

GOVERNMENT APPROVES PROMOTION OF OVER 219,000 PUBLIC SERVANTS
The government has approved the promotion of 219,042 public servants during the 2025/2026 financial year in a move aimed at improving morale, motivation, and efficiency across the public sector.

The announcement was made by Hon. Ridhiwani Kikwete during the second Annual General Inclusive Meeting of the Association of Administration and Human Resource Management Professionals in Tanzania’s public service, held in Arusha.

Hon. Kikwete directed human resource officers nationwide to ensure that all eligible employees receive promotions on time, warning that negligence, procedural delays, or non-compliance would not be tolerated within public institutions.

He also instructed that all transfer applications and official responses in the public service be processed exclusively through the e-Uhamisho online system, following reports of fraudulent transfer letters circulating in some institutions.

According to the minister, the digital system is intended to strengthen transparency, accountability, and trust in public administration while reducing opportunities for fraud and procedural irregularities.

BRELA ENCOURAGES ATHLETES TO PROTECT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
The Business Registrations and Licensing Agency has urged Tanzanian athletes and sports stakeholders to register their intellectual property (IP) rights to protect innovations and create sustainable income opportunities within the sports industry.

The call was made during a one-day seminar on intellectual property and sports held in Dar es Salaam, bringing together participants from across the country’s sports sector.

The seminar focused on raising awareness about the role of intellectual property in supporting athletes’ personal development, commercial growth, and institutional advancement for sports organisations.

The event formed part of activities marking World Intellectual Property Day 2026 under the theme “Intellectual Property and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate.”

Stakeholders attending the workshop included representatives from sports associations and regulatory institutions such as the Fair Competition Commission, Copyright Society of Tanzania, and National Sports Council, alongside sports journalists and industry professionals.

The initiative reflects growing efforts to position intellectual property protection as a key driver of innovation, commercialization, and long-term socio-economic development within Tanzania’s sports sector.

ZANZIBAR INTENSIFIES CRACKDOWN ON DRUG TRAFFICKING
Zanzibar has stepped up its fight against illicit drugs, with authorities filing 418 criminal cases linked to drug trafficking and related offences during the 2025/2026 financial year.

The figures were presented by Hon. Hemed Suleiman Abdulla while delivering his office’s budget speech before the House of Representatives in Chukwani.

According to Hon. Abdulla, intensified operations by the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority resulted in the arrest of 53 suspects, including 45 men and eight women, connected to the distribution of cannabis, khat, heroin, and cocaine.

He noted that criminal networks are increasingly adopting sophisticated methods to evade law enforcement, citing a case involving a Romanian national and accomplices accused of concealing narcotic substances in confectionery products such as candies, cashews, and biscuits.

The government says the operations reflect a broader commitment to strengthening anti-drug enforcement, protecting communities, and addressing the growing complexity of narcotics trafficking across the islands.

FINANCE MINISTRY REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR STRONGER NGO PARTNERSHIPS

GOVERNMENT ROLLS OUT PROGRAMME TO STRENGTHEN MARRIAGE MEDIATION

Hon. Katimba explained that the programme seeks to empower Marriage Conciliation Boards through specialized training in counselling, mediation, and dispute resolution. The goal is to ensure that marital conflicts are addressed fairly and efficiently before escalating to court proceedings.

She emphasized that mediation remains an important mechanism for preserving marriages, reducing pressure on the judicial system, and promoting social harmony within communities.

The initiative reflects broader government efforts to strengthen family institutions and improve access to alternative dispute resolution mechanisms nationwide.
