TANZANIA HOLDS FIRST RAW CASHEW AUCTION FOR THIS SEASON
Tanzania has conducted its first auction of raw cashew nuts for the 2025/2026 season, with farmers selling their produce at prices ranging between 3,520/- and 2,550/- per kilogram. The auction, conducted by the Tandahimba–Newala Cooperative Union (TANECU), took place over the weekend in Tandahimba District, Mtwara Region. A total of 26,254 tonnes of raw cashew nuts were sold through an online platform under the Tanza-Mercantile Exchange (TMX).
Speaking shortly after the auction, several cashew growers expressed optimism that prices would continue to rise as more auctions take place. TANECU Chairperson, Karim Chipora, urged farmers to maintain high standards of quality to sustain Tanzania’s strong reputation in the international market and attract better prices. Tanzania remains one of Africa’s major producers of premium-quality cashew nuts, particularly from Tandahimba and Newala districts, which are known for favourable climatic conditions and strong government support.
The Director General of the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT), Mr Alfred Francis, announced that the transportation of raw cashew nuts from main warehouses to Mtwara Port will be carried out around the clock to prevent congestion. According to the CBT report, cashew production for the 2025/2026 season is projected to reach 700,000 tonnes, up from 595,000 tonnes recorded in the 2024/2025 season. This increase is attributed to significant government investment, particularly in the provision of agricultural inputs and technical support to farmers.

GOLD, AGRICULTURE PRODUCE POWER TANZANIA’S EXPORTS
Tanzania’s exports of goods and services continued their upward trajectory, rising by about 15% to USD 17.09 billion in the year ending September 2025. The growth was driven largely by strong earnings from gold, manufactured goods, and traditional agricultural produce.
According to the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), the positive performance reflects increased receipts from gold, manufactured products, cashew nuts and tobacco, alongside higher earnings from tourism and transport services.
Goods exports rose sharply to USD 10.12 billion, up from USD 8.23 billion recorded in the year ending September 2024. This improvement was largely supported by gold, manufactured goods, cashew nuts, cereals, and tobacco.
The report shows that gold exports surged by 35.8% to USD 4.43 billion, compared with USD 3.26 billion in the corresponding period. The increase is attributed to elevated global gold prices and stable production levels. Gold remained the country’s top foreign exchange earner, accounting for about 44% of total goods exports.

EAST AFRICAN COURT TO RULE ON CASE CHALLENGING TANZANIA’S ONLINE CONTENT REGULATIONS
The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) is scheduled to issue its ruling in Reference No. 30 of 2020, a case brought by the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) and three other petitioners against the Attorney General of Tanzania. The petitioners challenge the Electronic and Postal Communications (Online Content) Regulations, 2020, published in the Government Gazette on July 17, 2020, claiming they violate fundamental democratic principles, including freedom of expression, transparency, accountability, and good governance.
They have requested that the court direct the Attorney General to repeal the regulations, arguing they conflict with the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (EAC), which protects citizens’ rights and freedoms. Additionally, the petitioners contend that the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) was granted excessive powers under these regulations, allegedly contravening Articles 6(d), 7(2), and 8(1)(c) of the EAC Treaty.
The case was heard on November 13, 2025, before a five-judge bench of the Court’s First Instance Division, led by Principal Judge Justice Yohane Masara, sitting with Justices Richard Wejuli, Richard Muhumuza, Dr. Gacuko Leonard, and Kayembe Kasanda.
